CHARACTER INFO
Character: Aranea Highwind
Canon: Final Fantasy XVI | Post Episode Prompto before the timeskip/Comrades
Age: 30
Background Information: The Wiki actually has a pretty good summary of Aranea's role in the game including Episode Prompto. However, I'm not incorporating most of the Dawn of the Future content because it's basically an Alternate Ending to the original game story, and I'd rather work with any castmates on how to handle that. The only thing I will incorporate will be most of Aranea's story since except for one particular part, it can all still be compliant with the original canon.
In summary, after the events of Altissa, Aranea and her group returned to Gralea to find it overrun with daemons and witness a Diamond Weapon released in the city. Aranea orders everyone to try and rescue the civilians while she goes down to try and deal with it. After a long chase she's forced to reconvene with her group to find that they have gathered all the children that had been kept safe while the adults tried to defend against the daemons.
Seeing this reminds Aranea of her own parents who forced her to stay with the other children when her village was attacked by daemons. At the time she had wanted to fight with them but was unable to, and with their deaths she grew up training herself so that she could fight. This led to her becoming a mercenary renown for her skills and eventually joining Niflheim's Army to rise to her Commodore status. One that she would actually resign from after learning Emperor Aldercapt had died and having long grown tired of the changes that had been occurring through the empire. Thus after meeting Ardyn and declaring her resignation, she resumes chasing after the Weapon.
This point is where there is a divergence in what is plausible for original canon and alternate timeline occurs. In the novel, Aranea encounters Loqi who is protecting a girl. Aranea would take this girl under her care while Loqi remains behind. This girl is revealed to be Emperor Aldercapt's hidden granddaughter, Solara Aldercapt Antiquum. She makes no appearance in the original game; instead the novel will continue with Solara playing a vital role in the other chapters that lead to that alternate ending. Although Aranea will take on a mother/guardian-like role for Solara, for the sake of play and any potential future castmates, I'm not going to fully incorporate this because it really changes a lot of what happens during the 10 year timeskip. To give myself some leeway, I could have it "existing" but Aranea making no mention or reference to it because at the time of canon point it wouldn't matter much for her. But for the most part I'm just going to play as if this part didn't happen.
Instead, Aranea rejoins Wedge and chase after the Diamond Weapon on their way to Tenebrae. It's a tough fight, one where she almost loses and comes close to death, and it's only with Biggs and Wedge joining on magitek armor that she is able to regroup and drive her spear into the core to destroy the Weapon. They all somehow survive the aftermath and make their way to Tenebrae.
There they regroup, help the citizens, and eventually a train pulling a certain prince and his retinue arrive. This is the point where the timeline continues as the original game. In terms of where Aranea herself when she's pulled in, it will be some time after helping Prompto and the very beginning of the ten years of darkness where daemons have become more rampant, currently moving from place to place and try and help people attacked by daemons.
Personality:
1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.
Armed with an arsenal of sass and charm and always walking with her head held high, Aranea is a woman who is sure of herself and hardly ever holds any doubts of her own. Having spent most of her adult life as a mercenary, she still maintains her independent mentality even after joining the Imperial army and becoming a high ranking Commodore. In fact, she'll often refer to her pay and won't work for more than what she deems beneficial.
Still, she does not go into anything half-assed and will go all out if she wants to (especially if it's fun and enjoyable). Whether it's to live her own way or to help people, or even in the face of battle, she will not back down so easily. She may look and seem like she could be reckless, and she does carry some element of that, but it's more in spirit than in actual actions. Whether it's dealing with something inconsequential or stronger than she can handle, she will quickly assess the situation and determine if it's worth the effort or not. Additionally, it's not so much about a winning or losing. She knows she can't win every battle and that sometimes the win isn't worth it. So once something is no longer worthwhile or is too questionable for her to put up with (or the pay isn't worth it), she'll quit without a second thought. Pride is not an issue, she'd prefer to live rather than die uselessly.
She's lived through and seen enough to know how reality works, and thus she is very much a realist and doesn't really follow idealism very far. That isn't to say she doesn't hold any idle hopes or dreams, but she knows the chances of them being realized or the sacrifices and consequences that come with it. It's part of the reason why she has more of a grounded personality and dry, sarcastic humor. Having seen both the good and dark sides of humanity, pipe dreams are definitely out.
2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?
Money is a great motivator, but in truth Aranea is more about protecting and helping people than she might let on. The death of her parents and being unable to help them is what led her down the mercenary path and to become as strong as she is. One could think her path to hunting daemons is an act of vengeance, and it was in some part. But it's long since evolved to go beyond her own personal vendetta and just trying to protect others since daemons and other hostile creatures are a constant threat. It's also why he doesn't want to drag others into whatever mess she finds herself in. She will take the lead and put herself in front of others to reduce their risks even at the cost of her own. Of course, a lot of that is due to her own confidence in her abilities, but it is her way to protect them.
She values the lives of her people and others quite a lot, and she doesn't want anyone to suffer the same way she did. This is especially so towards children, having a soft spot since she once had to look after younger kids her age. Even if she may not always express or show it, she does care and does not want those lives wasted for nothing. She will also encourage others to push forward even when things seem bleak—although her words can sound crass or rough for the situation, not really one for the "tender" touch or showing sentimentality.
It should also be noted that Aranea only joined the army because she believed the emperor was serving to help the country and its people. But when things started to change with the use of daemons and stealing the Lucian crystal, her thoughts begin to waver until it ultimately leads to her defection. She could no longer stomach the corruption that led to the Empire's fall and would move independently to help those she could before forming her allegiance with the Lucians.
3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
In terms of how she treats others, she will give her honest opinion, and it's usually blunt. Very blunt. Only in truly delicate situations will she water it down, although even that is just slightly offset by something more considerate or sympathetic. But one should not expect her to give hugs or comfort of that nature. If anything, she's more likely to try and push the individual forward—sometimes with a physical kick—or tell them to suck it up and deal with it. It kind of depends on who it is and what the situation calls for. She tells it like it is, but she'll take whatever is dished at her, too. She may have her own sense of pride and arrogance, but she'll recognize when she's wrong or agree if there's hypocrisy going on. Sassy, sarcastic, and at times dismissive, this "rough" attitude also helps keeps some distance between her and others.
That all said, she's not completely heartless. There's a little softness underneath those hard edges. She'll be hard on someone, but she'll also give credit where it's due, especially when it's rightly earned. However, don't mistake that type of personality as her being a tough hardass. It's more that she doesn't really "deal" with those who waste her time and not doing what they should. If someone's being weak and not bettering themselves, then she'll just drop them and leave them behind. She's moving on. However, if they are working hard and she can see the effort, then she'll also stop and help. She may even give the proper gentle hand depending on the person and situation.
She does sometimes gets surprised when genuine sincerity is shown to her. She's more used to there being some kind of exchange or superficial relationship, so when there is actual care and sincerity, she can sometimes be a little flustered before just accepting as it is. It's not that she's suspicious or distrusting, it's just because of her line of work it's not something she encounters often. But while she won't reject it, she also knows to not let it get in the way as she knows it can be a fatal weakness. So while she has a friendly, sociable personality and can flirt and tease, she keeps her own heart well guarded, only allowing those she's truly close to and trusts to see even a little of those deeper feelings.
4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
When a party member, she slaps or kicks "downed" members as her "heal" to bring them back into battle.
Abilities & Inventory:
Aranea is classified as a dragoon and thus her skills involved her spear, high jumps, and other versatile, acrobatic moves. She can jump, flip around, and excels in aerial combat. Although her ground game is also not something to laugh at, most of her power does come from the air and using gravity to her advantage for those downward thrusts.
As for how she can perform dragoon feats, while she's trained and built her own natural strength, a lot of it has to deal with the magitek gear she has. She has an anti-gravity belt that allows her to jump high and remain in the air for longer duration, and her actual armor will help lessen the impacts should take a harder fall. But most important is her Stoss Spear. This spear is equipped with a magitek engine and has different functions and features that help with her attacks and the tip can even change forms. For example, the tip can expand and turn into more of a hook, allowing it to latch onto the target and let her hang on. It can also spin like a drill to allow to pierce through even further. She is also capable of "summoning" it, making it disappear and reappear at will. How, we have no idea, but it happens.
Both of these should still be usable even in Escordvi, but I plan to have her gain some wind magic to help mimic her abilities in game.
Aside from her fighting prowess, as a mercenary and Commodore, she has a lot of experience commanding others. She knows where to prioritize and how to get things done—and she will do it. So if the game ever faces another disaster, she'll be able to help and handle it. Additionally, while she might not be an engineer, she's familiar with airships.

ARMADA SELECTION
IT WAS A TOSS UP but Aranea will be going to the Corsairs to go back to her mercenary roots. She's had enough of being a military dog, and she likely wouldn't have stayed long with the Paladins.
